Remember my “Bathing = Bonding” post about how I used the act of showering/bathing my birds to get them to be OK next to one another, even though outside of that environment they hated one another?

Well, I decided to try that AGAIN… and [...]

Healthy Parrot Treats

I found out about Roudybush Rice Treats for parrots from Bird Talk Magazine. I was actually reading an article about low fat diets for birds that tend to develop fatty tumors (mainly galahs) and so it really caught my eye.

I began looking into “power treats”, basically foods I could give my birds that [...]

African Grey Parrot or Monkey?

Hanging from Me: Congo African Grey “Cressi”

Yes, my African Grey parrot could pretty much pass for a monkey the way she plays on me. She hangs from anything she can grasp; clothes, hair, hands, shoes, anything. And I don’t mind – most of the time – as it’s hilarious and entertaining [...]

I Left On Vacation & My Parrot Starved Himself

Posted by: Jamieleigh on: February 22, 2009

I got my blue throated macaw, whom I call “Jinx”, back in October 2008. He lived with me in Orlando for less than a month before I took my first traveling trip (via airlines) with him to Seattle, Washington for Halloween (I love spending holidays with my flock!)

Performing Parrots

Posted by: Jamieleigh on: February 20, 2009

Some parrots (like the Sulfphur Crested Cockatoo in the video above) LOVE performing tricks for people like you and me. Others are quite camera and crowd shy, and that’s OK, too. But for those parrots that love being the “hams” and center of attention… they should be allowed to show off [...]

Waldorf Salad For Your Bird

Posted by: Jamieleigh on: February 19, 2009

You can pretty much always find a bird on me no matter what I am doing. Well, over the holidays I made all the dinner for my family and one goody I decided to make was waldorf salad. But I changed the recipe a little to make it a bit more [...]

Myth: Freeflighted Birds Don’t Talk

Cockatoos: Galahs “Bondi” and “Bandit”

A huge discouragement to letting a bird be a bird and use its natural ability to fly… is this myth that flighted birds don’t talk. This is completely false!

I know, because I have both types of birds; the one who never flew outside before (Bondi, my galah) [...]

Parrots Learn Faster From Other Parrots

Posted by: Jamieleigh on: February 13, 2009

Anyone who has more than one parrot has learned pretty fast that parrots learn fastest from other parrots. Even when learning to talk, they learn best from listening to other parrots speak. I’ve learned both of these things from having a flock of birds compared to just one. Obviously, I had [...]

Give Your Parrot Flowers!

Posted by: Jamieleigh on: February 12, 2009

I was staying at my parents’ house in Sandpoint, Idaho (I sometimes refer to it as Sagle as well) over the winter holidays with my flock and my mom kept receiving beautiful bouquets of flowers from friends, family and co-workers. She actually got so many she started putting one in each [...]
